We do this in a variety of ways, including academic and vocational scholarships, as well as coaching and promoting community service in Kirkland through middle school Builders Clubs, and high school Key Clubs. We also sponsor career building activities for at-risk teens at the Kirkland Teen Union Building, also known as K-tub. Another way we support our young is through our Jack Keller Memorial Fund. We provide free or low-cost medically necessary orthodontic care for young people whose family income makes them ineligible for state DHHS support, yet the family is financially unable to afford costly orthodontic care. We’ve been able to continue providing these services by means of generous family & individual donations, plus the occasional corporate grant, but the bulk of our annual revenue comes from two public fundraisers; A fun, upscale pancake breakfast wherein the entire net proceeds are donated Attain Housing, an Eastside organization that provides free temporary housing to homeless mothers with children. The second source familiar to many of you, is our annual Kiwanis Christmas Tree sale which recently has been held at Juanita Beach Park. There are numerous other examples of how we serve our community, but our most pressing concern now is that the Covid-19 pandemic has greatly jeopardized our ability to conduct these two critically important fundraisers, which means we can no longer address the various needs of the young in Greater Kirkland. This is unprecedented. To help alleviate the damage, we have decided to still conduct our pancake breakfast, but given the potential health concern associated with bringing large numbers of people together, we have instead opted to conduct a “virtual pancake breakfast” wherein every virtual pancake you buy, and every dollar you donate, will go toward continuing the fine work we’ve been doing in our community since 1947. Please, use our website to purchase “virtual pancakes”. They may not taste quite as good as the real thing, but they will bring to you the satisfaction that you are doing something of great importance for your community, and it’s youth. We hope that this pandemic will soon pass, and that next year we can conduct a more traditional pancake breakfast, complete with pancakes, butter, syrup, sausages, and musical entertainment.
